The Dreadmill

Week 3 of marathon training has begun.  That means a long run, a speed workout and a tempo run sandwiched around two cross training workouts.  I have to leave town on a business trip tomorrow, so I did  the speed workout tonight -- on the treadmill.  And we are going away this weekend to take the Official Older Daughter  off to camp, which means it is going to be hard to squeeze in the long run.  Really hard.  I was kind of thinking I would get up early and do it before work on Friday, but not sure that will work with this business trip now in the mix.

So, as I was running tonight, the solution hit me: run on a treadmill on my trip.  UGH.  17 miles on the mill.  That makes all the sense in the world, but just not sure I can do it.  Any suggestions are entirely welcome.  I have an iPod and I sure hope my hotel has a nice gym.

Below is the chart of my speed workout tonight.  It was fast, and hard and went by very, very quickly, maybe because I was dreading the next treadmill workout....

  1. You sir are hardcore and committed to your cause! I just don't think I could handle more than 5 miles on a dread mill. Good luck and tell us how it goes!

Side note: Can you please email me and explain how on earth you do speedwork on the treadmill? I'm serious. I do not understand this and because of my schedule have a hard time getting out to the track so have been debating this dreadmill speedwork but do not understand the dynamics. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

  2. OY. Treadmill for 17 miles is going to be tough. BUT - I think you can do it. You are dedicated. Just get those tunes crankin and add some small inclines and declines to mix it up.

  3. I do not envy you that treadmill long run. I did a 4mi recovery on the treadmill last night and it drove me crazy. Maybe you should download Gladiator or a Prefontaine movie on your iPod?

  5. Thanks so much for your words of wisdom over my quarterlifecrisis situation. I very much appreciated them. :)

17 miles on the treadmill... wow... um, maybe you could recruit some one to keep you company, keep you entertained for portions of the run? I think distractions will make the miles go by faster.... or watch movies/tv? Good luck!

  6. My trick for running long miles on the treadmill is setting the hill setting to random and then allow myself to speedup and slowdown every few minutes as needed.
Some new cool tunes would help too. Good luck!

  7. I have no idea how you finished 17 miles on the treadmill. I had to run 5 minutes on one at PT Monday and already was getting bored...

  8. I must be the biggest running loser in the world, because I honestly don't mind the treadmill much. I run at our local Lifetime Fitness and am surrounded by TVs and all kinds of other things to watch. It is also so much easier on my body and I recover just that much quicker.

Best of luck with your training.
