The descent into Hades...

It has been three weeks since I stopped running because of the stress fracture in my right foot.  I tried to run over the weekend, and no go.  None.  Since then it has been 3 weeks of food, spring and drink.  It will take at least a month to recover from this and be back in form.  Maybe I should hit the gym and just bike or row. Ugh. Who knows.

That is also why I have not posted.  I have not had any running news or insight to share, and all of my blogs would have been about food.  And I have consumed enough food lately, so writing about it would have made me even hungrier.

But I will pass on something I did last weekend that was FANTASTIC.  I barbecued baked potatoes on the grill.  I coated them in veggie oil, Lawrys salt, and wrapped them in aluminum foil.  And then on the grill, on the side opposite the fire for about an hour.  Wonderful.  I also added smoke chips, for "smoked" potatoes but I am not sure that had any effect; they were wrapped in foil after all. But when they were done, they were firm, moist and just wonderful.

Congrats to all those Boston folks!  That is my inspiration to come back and run again!

  1. I have missed you my NY friend :O)

When I had my stress fracture (tibia) last year, I was down for 8 weeks. I rode my bike, walked up hills for 30 min at a time and swam. I came back stronger than ever!

  3. So sorry--I've been there, believe me, and it is SO tough to sit it out. You should get to the gym and do something, just for some endorphins and sanity. Plus, maintaining your aerobic system will help you return from injury quicker. Good luck with it!

  7. I've been there, twice, with pelvic stress fractures. I used the Elyptical to keep my sanity! You are almost there, give it enough time to heal, it was 6 weeks for me, but I heard foot stress fractures take less time. Hand in there!

Maybe you need to start a food blog to help pass the time.....btw, baked sweet potatos are GREAT on the grill.

  10. Hey NY Wolve!

So sorry to hear of your stress fracture. Just came off of one, myself - left foot. A bummer having to sit on the sidelines... messes with your thinking (and makes your butt/belly grow..lol). Hang in there. Listen to your body.

Sending you 'healthy vibes' from Orlando!

  13. Hi. I just found your blog through Misszippy's blog. We have some things in common. One, I work and run in Manhattan. Two, I blog about it, at www.downtown-runner.com. Three, I have a stress fracture of my second metatarsal that happened last Saturday in a 5K race.

I'm trying to get over the funk this has got me in. Don't want to blog. Don't want to eat right, etc...

But some encouraging words from other runners is working and I'm planning a program to stay in shape and be ready to get back out there when the toe is back in running form.

Hang in there. I'll be reading about your recovery.

  15. I'm so sorry to hear that your foot injury is a stress fracture. I've had a stress fracture before and my doctor had me in the space boot for 6-8 weeks. I'm thinking three weeks is definitely not enough time. You could also try water running (assuming that you have access to a pool).

  19. Sorry about the foot. I definitely know how it goes. I'm hoping to start running soon again too! Don't push it too quickly, it'll only set you back!

Your baked potato method sounds fantastic! I wonder if it would work okay on a grill pan (since we apartment dweller's have no grills!)

    Feel better soon!
